Barbour Icons Patch Bedale
$460 for a Bedale assembled from offcuts, which is either a good joke about waxed cotton or a very good jacket.
Barbour has taken the Bedale, which is its shorter riding jacket and the one most people actually want, and made the outer shell out of patchwork: needlecord, plain waxed cotton and tartan waxed cotton, stitched into panels. The lining is the house tartan. The whole outer is 100% waxed cotton and it is re-waxable, which is the specification to buy on. The jacket costs $460.
Patchwork is a risky move on a jacket whose entire appeal is that it looks the same in 2026 as it did in 1980. The Bedale is bought by people who do not want to be looked at. Cutting it into panels is the opposite of that, and a good number of Barbour customers will find this version faintly appalling, which is presumably the point of putting it in a line called Icons.
The re-waxable part is what keeps it honest. A waxed jacket is a thing you maintain rather than replace: you re-wax it every year or two, it gets darker and softer and marks up, and after a decade it looks like it has a biography. That is true of this one as much as the plain one. The patchwork will age at different rates across the panels, which sounds like a defect and will probably turn out to be the best thing about it.
Buy it a size down from your instinct. Everybody gets this wrong.
