adidas Samba LT W

The Samba LT W takes the familiar low-top and trades the standard tongue for an oversized fold-over panel borrowed from soccer cleats.

The Samba LT W is a chocolate-brown version of a shoe adidas has reissued in nearly every colour available to a dye lab. The price is not published in the source material, so we are not going to guess at it.

The tongue is the actual news here. It is an oversized, fold-over panel lifted from old-school soccer cleats, and it sits across the top of the shoe at a scale the standard Samba does not attempt. Pale blue Three Stripes run across the brown shoe, which keeps the colourway from reading as one flat block of colour.

What changes here is proportion, not the shoe's basic shape. The tongue is the only stated new idea on a silhouette that has otherwise stayed fixed across countless colourways, and the source does not describe the upper material or sole in any detail, so we are not going to invent either.

Brown as a winter colourway makes a reasonable case for itself. The usual black-and-white Samba rotation is easy to get tired of, and a deep coffee tone reads less like a trend colour and more like something that will sit quietly in rotation through the colder months. Whether the tongue earns its real estate is a matter of taste, since nothing in the source suggests it changes fit or performance. It is decoration borrowed from function, not function itself.

The verdict

A good-looking variation on a shoe that did not need another one. Buy it for the tongue, skip it if you already own three Sambas in a similar shape.
