The Alto ART 02 costs about $15,700 and arrives as the first Alto watch meant to stay in the lineup rather than disappear after one run. Alto, a young Franco-Swiss brand founded by Thibaud Guittard with Raphaël Abeillon as creative director, built its name on the ART 01, a limited collaboration with sculptor Bernar Vernet. The ART 02 keeps that design language but narrows the price and widens the production, with an initial run of about 150 pieces.
The case is Grade 5 titanium, octagonal, satin-finished, 36mm in diameter and 42.3mm in length, and weighs 38 grams without the bracelet. That is a meaningful reduction from the ART 01 and should make the watch sit well on smaller wrists. Thickness is 10.2mm. The faceted sapphire crystal, cut with severe angles and bevels, is the most distinctive thing on the wrist and about as far from a standard dome as the category gets. The dial is ridged, microblasted anthracite brass, and the seconds hand runs backward, a deliberate oddity that does not change its function.
Inside is the Caliber A02, a new movement made with Cercle des Horlogers specifically for this case. It is a micro-rotor, self-winding movement, rhodium-plated and microblast-finished, beating at 5 Hz with a 50-hour power reserve, visible through a faceted sapphire caseback. The titanium bracelet uses a one-button quick-change system per lug and offers 2mm of toolless microadjustment on each side. Water resistance is 50 meters.
Among titanium integrated-bracelet sports watches, few rivals match case, bracelet and independent movement design at this price, since the closest comparable piece from a major house now runs past $20,000 once it is sized at 37mm. Set against that, the ART 02 is also an unproven brand asking established-brand money.

The verdict
A distinctive case and crystal from a brand with almost no track record. The design earns the price; the name on the dial has not yet.
